Understanding the Impact of Consumer Behaviour on Ad Targeting

Those Annoying Ads Huh ? Or Are They ?

Any SEO agency in Sydney adopts any measure necessary to increase sales for their clients and ads, whether or not it ids PPC or social media ads are part of digital advertising.

Ads can either feel super helpful or totally annoy the Hell out of you. One minute you’re just scrolling, and the next, boom — there’s an ad for something you were literally just thinking about, Funny that huh?  Kind of creepy? Maybe. But also… pretty cool when you think about it.

That’s not just luck or your phone reading your mind; it’s all about consumer behaviour and how it shapes the ads you see.

So, What Is Consumer Behavior?

Being SEO experts for small businesses, we deal a lot with consumer behaviour even when we target the necessary audience with SEO and now GEO. Consumer behavior may sound like a fancy phrase. However, it’s really just a way of saying how people act when they’re shopping, such as what they click on, what they search for, how long they hang out on a product page, and even what they leave behind in their cart. Basically, it’s all the little things we do online without even thinking; like checking reviews for a new phone case or comparing sneakers on five different sites.

Advertisers watch for these patterns (not in a creepy way!) to figure out what you might be into.

Why Ad Targeting Needs Behaviour Data

When businesses just throw ads at anyone, it’s kind of like flinging spaghetti at a wall to see what sticks. It never usually works, guys. You gotta think outside the box a little and jump into the end users thread. One cool tool that helps with this is GoAudience. It lets advertisers build smarter audience lists based on real behavior. So instead of taking wild guesses, they can be a little more thoughtful — and less spammy — with their ads.

It’s all over the place when it is just random, kind of annoying, and usually pointless. But when they actually take the time to understand what people are doing online — what they click on, what they look at what they are looking at — they can show ads that actually make sense. Provide the right answer to answer  apain point and you win. The right person sees the right thing at the right time, and that’s when ads actually work.

Suppose you were looking at some noise-canceling headphones on the internet but didn’t buy them.

The next day, you see an ad with a discounted price for the very same headphones. That slight push might be all it takes to get you to buy them. But what if that same ad came to someone who doesn’t even like wearing headphones? Total waste. See what I mean?

Everyone Shops Differently

Some people are super quick buyers. They see something cool and hit “buy now” without a second thought. Others are more cautious. They take time to compare prices, read reviews, and maybe sleep on it before making a decision.

That’s why it’s important for advertisers to recognise different types of shopping habits. If someone takes their time, showing them the same product a few times might help. If someone is a fast buyer, it makes sense to hit them with the best deal right off the bat. Consumer behavior helps brands figure out what kind of shopper someone is, so they can match the message to the mindset.

How Do Brands Actually Know What You’re Into?

No, they don’t have your diary or your group chat history. It doesn’t work that way guys, Relax. They use tools that track your online actions. These are typical tools that we even use as SEO experts — like which websites you visit or which posts you interact with, clicks here, clicks there. It all draws a pattern of a buyer’s behaviour, which at the end points to their needs or wants.

This helps them group people with similar interests and behaviours together. Then, they can show ads that make sense for that group.

We have ourselves written tonnes of ads for lawyers, dentists, plumbers and very many varied small businesses in all aspects of industry, and it all applies to the same principle: understand your customer’s pain point, deliver on it, and you make the sale.
