Welcome to another PK SEO post, based on over 20 years of experience. Today, we’re diving into a common question: how does AI search compare to Google search, and what does the future hold for both in the online search space? Will AI decrease organic search clicks to websites or even visits. Read on.
For years, Google has been the leader in organic search and PPC ads, dominating the internet for more than two decades. However, Facebook is now becoming a strong competitor, as many people use local community pages to find trade services or professional help.
Facebook advertising is also gaining popularity and is still generally cheaper than Google Ads, but its costs are slowly increasing over time. While Google remains the main player in online search, its dominance is starting to weaken. With the rise of AI platforms like ChatGPT, which utilise machine learning, natural language processing, and semantic understanding, the way people search online is beginning to change.
I’ve been doing SEO for over 20 years and have seen Google constantly change its algorithms.
One week, your phone is ringing off the hook; the next, your business is barely surviving. Back in the days of the Yellow Pages, we didn’t have these ranking issues. If you had a good ad, your phone would keep ringing nonstop, all year long.
Now, 20 years later, SEO is still effective, but the game is changing again with the rise of AI. More and more people are using AI search. Although Google has made its search algorithms better, new competitors are entering the market. As a Sydney SEO specialist, I’ve tried various editing tools, but nothing matches the power of AI in creating content and improving search results.
Google often says its algorithm updates are meant to benefit users. I call bullshit on that one, and here’s why: These updates never seem to impact their AdWords customers. When businesses pay for ads, it’s like Google just wiped its own Ass with its own algorithms. I have even written a post on the bullshit that is the Google user experience.
Businesses hiring small business SEO services and trying to succeed with organic SEO are fed up with Google’s constant changes. One day you’re ranking well after investing a lot of money in SEO; the next day, it’s all gone because someone at Google decided to tweak the system again, supposedly for the “user protection.”
It feels like a never-ending chase, and you have to wonder if it’s worth spending on Google’s overpriced advertising. I say it’s overrated because, in reality, only big businesses that can afford top-tier SEO will rank on page 1. Anyone on page 2 or beyond gets no visibility. Websites without traffic are like online resumes that no one ever sees. Honestly, the Yellow Pages were better because everyone got exposure, and people would look beyond just the first page.
To be honest, these days when I need to look something up, I’m more likely to use ChatGPT or Jasper AI to ask a question or get a task done.
Google is starting to feel more like a library than a search engine to me. Why spend time scrolling through pages and looking for specific keywords when you can just ask AI directly and get a clear, targeted answer right away? Instead of sorting through ten different links and trying to pick the best one, AI gives you the exact response you need. If I’m doing this as an SEO expert, imagine how many other SEOs are doing the same—probably thousands.
To try and show an example of the simplicity of using AI for search rather than Google, take a look at the example below and tell me why on earth would I want to use Google search for quick questions, not reserach. I asked AI and Google the same question
As you can see, the clear winner is AI search. Why would I want to waste time figuring out who answers the question on Google to the right? This is why these days, I am always advocating that anyone who has a business online begins optimisation for AI search. SEO companies in Australia and global need to adapt this new search
If you don’t, it will not be long before you are left behind. All of Google’s bullshit funny animal algorithm name updates, core updates and God knows what else “STILL” could not return a concise answer as the one above. In my honest opinion, it is fast lights out for Google traditional search the way AI is coming along. It just goes to show that Google, regardless of its algorithms, can only deliver what it has within its index, and that is ten results that best match with the suer query. AI, being a natural language processor with semantic ability, blows Google out of the water. All SEO providers need to adapt to AI search, not using AI to SEO websites for Google search. Google is even cracking down on AI implemented content to begin with.
This is straight to the point answer the question results. I believe it will take Google another 20 years before it can do this with traditional search results. This is why you MUST optimise for AI search
Currently, 1.4 Billion searches a month are conducted using AI search. It is clear where the direction using traditional search engines compared to AI is fast heading. Google will continue to be the dominant player in research information or in depth information that is required, but for quick question answer situations like this, AI search leaves Google in the dust.
| Feature | AI-Based Search (AOI) | Google Search |
|---|---|---|
| How It Answers | Gives you straight, to-the-point answers in plain text. | Shows a list of links, and you pick one to find your answer out of the top ten search results. |
| Follow-Up Questions | You can keep chatting and ask more questions easily. | You need to type a new search every time. |
| Personalised Replies | Adjusts answers based on what you’ve asked before. | Mostly relies on your search history but less adaptable in real-time. |
| Speed & Efficiency | Gives a quick summary without clicking through links. | You often have to open several links to find what you need. |
| Handling Complex Questions | Can break down tricky questions and provide detailed answers. | May give you a bunch of mixed results or a snippet if you’re lucky. |
| Ads and Distractions | No ads, just answers. | Lots of ads, especially at the top of the page. |
| User Experience | Feels like chatting with a knowledgeable person. | Standard search results page with links and ads. |
| Real-Time Updates | Can include real-time info if it’s connected to live data. | Shows real-time info like news, weather, etc., depending on the query. |
| Answer Style | Offers various formats like lists, tables, and summaries based on what you ask. | Mostly text-based, sometimes a featured snippet. |
If you want quick, direct answers without the hassle, AI search is great. If you prefer browsing options, researching or checking multiple sources, Google’s got your back.
