The Myth of High DA Links: Why Trust Flow Matters More

Thinking Of Buying High DA Links?

In the world of SEO services, “high DA links” have become a trendy buzzword.  Unfortunately, what some marketing and guest blogging companies charge for these so-called high DA links is nothing short of daylight robbery, especially considering how often they turn out to be completely worthless.

Many small business SEO services and marketers pursue backlinks from high Domain Authority (DA) sites, believing these links will dramatically improve their rankings together with their SEO friendly website development services.

However, focusing solely on DA without factoring in other crucial metrics like Trust Flow (TF) is a mistake that can be both costly and ineffective. Time and again, we’ve seen that posting on high DA blogs yields minimal results compared to posting on just two or three mid-DA sites with Trust Flow above 30, and by this we mean HUUUUGE JUMPS in rankings. Quality always beats quantity when it comes to link building.

This post will delve into why high DA links with little to no Trust Flow are ineffective and how focusing on quality over quantity is key to a successful backlink strategy.

    Understanding DA and TF

    What Is Domain Authority?

Domain Authority (DA) is a metric created by Moz to estimate a website’s ability to rank in search engine results. However, many savvy SEO businesses in Australia (yes, the smart ones) have stopped paying attention to Moz’s DA scores altogether. Why? Because real SEO professionals understand that Trust Flow (TF) carries far more weight when it comes to delivering results.

I don’t bother chasing high DA links unless they come with substantial Trust Flow. DA is scored from 1 to 100, with higher numbers supposedly indicating better ranking potential. While this metric might give a rough idea of a domain’s overall “strength,” it’s important to note one critical fact: Google does not use DA as a ranking factor. That’s right—DA is nothing more than an estimate based on Moz’s proprietary algorithm. Many people don’t realize this, but it’s true—Google doesn’t give ” TWO SHITS ” about DA, no more than they care about their own Google user experience not applying to their own Adwords ads

Despite this, the idea that high DA links are essential has spread like wildfire across the internet. Some online marketers swear by DA, but only the shit one’s that rip everybody off, claiming that building links on high DA Web 2.0 properties is the magic bullet for ranking on page one.

Now, sure, this might work against competitors with low-quality links, but if even one of your competitors has backlinks with high Trust Flow (anything over 20 TF), you are toast, if that is all you have up your sleeve. You’re going to struggle to outrank anyone, but that is ok, as long as you get your traffic report from your SEO agency and they dazzle you with their traffic figures while you pay 4K  a month, that is all that matters to them.

The bottom line is this: DA without TF is a waste of time. Stop chasing the DA myth and focus on building real, trustworthy links that Google actually values.

Free Tools For Checking Domain Authority

There are a number of tools you can use for checking DA of a domain but understand, they have their limits with ” free “. To obtain full access you would have to take up a paid subscription but here are a  few for free checks

Moz Link Explorer is one of the popular ones for checking DA

    1. Sign up with email
    2. Create a free MOZ account
    3. Once you have access, enter your domain into the search bar and check your backlinks

    Ahrefs Backlink Checker Tool

    Visit Ahrefs free backlink checker

    1. Eneter your domain and run the check.
    2. Although it will give you a check on backlinks, it will also give you a DA Check

    Neil Patel’s Uber Suggest

    1. I actually use this software myself for a lot of metrics that I check. It also has an awesome AI writer and other features for writing effective marketing copy
    2. Enter your domain and analyse metrics

Some Tips While Using This Software

It is advisable you use maybe two or three different brands of software to gauge the differences but you should find  they can be relatively close.

    Understand The Metrics

    1. Domain Authority is a comparative metric, not a direct ranking factor. Use it to gauge your site against competitors.
    2. Track As Often As You Can
    3. Regularly monitor your DA so you can track your SEO efforts

    What Is Trust Flow?

Trust Flow, created by Majestic, measures the quality of backlinks pointing to a site. Unlike DA, which is influenced by the sheer quantity of links, TF evaluates how trustworthy and authoritative the linking sites are. This metric is often considered more reliable because it reflects the credibility of the links rather than their volume. It is why you shoulwd always source links like this. Even when you are approached by credible link building sources or you are requesting link building services and they offer you high DA links, remember to check and understand that TF matters more than DA. It is incredible how much money some link building companies charge for a high DA links that mean absolutely nothing and actually move the needle very little

Low And High Quality Links Examples Below

Looking at the domain metrics below of DA58 with TF1, if you were to find a domain that had far less DA but with much higher TF, you would see better results in rankings as Google values Trust, not DA. Remember what Google says about its trust signals. E.A.T (T is for trust ) This is one of them. For Security Reasons, we have hidden the domain

    Totally Crap Trust Flow

    Low Trust Flow

The Issue with High DA Links and No Trust Flow

High DA Doesn’t Equal High Quality

A high DA score can be easily manipulated by acquiring numerous low-quality links or by linking to spammy sites. Typical  high DA low trust sites are usually webs 2 blogs, which carry very little to no page authority. These are sold as the holy grail of link building when in fact, to rank with these means you need hundreds to thousands of them. I know, I have tested it using software and believe me, it takes a shit tonne of links for this to work. This means that a website may appear authoritative based on DA alone, but its links could lack the genuine credibility and trust that search engines value.

    For example:

    • A high DA site with many links from irrelevant or spammy domains may have zero relevance or trustworthiness.
    • This weakens the value of any backlinks it provides, making them ineffective for improving rankings.
    • Web 2 blogs, although high in DA are not a credible trust source either unless they have highly trusted sites pointing to the actual web 2 property itself.

    Common Myths About Domain Authority

    • Myth: Google directly uses Domain Authority as a ranking factor.
    • Truth: Domain Authority is a third-party metric created by Moz, not used by Google in its ranking algorithm. Google has its own evaluation systems for site quality.

A Higher DA Always Means Better Rankings

    • Myth: Websites with higher Domain Authority will always outrank lower DA sites. I have seen this time and time again.
    • Truth: DA is one of many indicators of site strength. Content quality, relevance, and on-page SEO can enable lower DA sites to outrank higher DA sites for specific keywords, hands down

Buying Links Instantly Boosts Domain Authority

    • Myth: Purchasing backlinks will lead to a quick increase in DA.
    • Truth: Paid links can be flagged as unnatural and lead to penalties, harming your SEO efforts. Organic and relevant link-building is more sustainable.

    Domain Authority Increases Overnight

    • Myth: You can boost your DA score in a short time with a few tweaks.
    • Truth: Building Domain Authority requires consistent efforts, such as acquiring high-quality backlinks, improving site structure, and publishing valuable content. It’s a gradual process.

    Domain Authority Doesn’t Fluctuate

    • Myth: Once you achieve a high DA, it will remain constant.
    • Truth: DA can fluctuate due to changes in your backlink profile, competitor performance, or updates to Moz’s algorithm. Monitoring your links and maintaining SEO best practices are essential.

More Backlinks Always Mean a Higher DA

    • Myth: The sheer number of backlinks directly correlates with a higher DA.
    • Truth: Quality matters more than quantity. A few high-quality backlinks from authoritative websites are more impactful than hundreds of low-quality links.

All Backlinks Have the Same Impact on DA

    • Myth: Any backlink you earn will boost Domain Authority equally.
    • Truth: Backlinks from authoritative, relevant, and trusted websites have a much higher impact on DA than links from low-authority or unrelated sites.

DA is the Same as Page Authority (PA)

    • Myth: Domain Authority and Page Authority are identical. They are not identical
    • Truth: DA measures the overall authority of an entire domain, while PA measures the authority of a specific page.

    Internal Links Don’t Impact DA

    • Myth: Only external backlinks affect Domain Authority.
    • Truth: Internal linking improves site structure and helps search engines crawl your site more effectively, indirectly influencing DA over time.

Domain Age is Key to a High DA

    • Myth: Older domains automatically have higher Domain Authority.
    • Truth: While domain age may contribute, active link-building, quality content, and a strong backlink profile are more significant factors.

Why Trust Flow Is The Metric To Watch

    1. Relevance and Authority

Trust Flow focuses on the quality of the links pointing to a domain. Websites with high TF typically:

    • Operate within a specific niche, not a blog loaded with different content pieces.
    • Maintain high editorial standards.
    • Have backlinks from other trusted sources.

This makes links from high-TF sites more valuable in Google’s eyes.

    2. Long-Term SEO Benefits

Building a backlink profile based on trust, rather than just authority, helps ensure sustainable rankings. Links from high-TF sites are less likely to be devalued in future algorithm updates.

    3. Avoiding Penalties

Low TF links are often associated with spammy practices, which could lead to penalties from Google. By prioritising Trust Flow, you reduce the risk of building a toxic backlink profile.

    Trust Flow Reflects Google’s Priorities

Google’s algorithms are designed to prioritise trust and relevance. Backlinks from websites with high Trust Flow indicate that the site is reputable within its niche or industry. that’s right DA without TF means shit.

Links from such sources are far more likely to improve rankings than links from high DA sites with little to no Trust Flow.

    3. Imbalanced Metrics Are a Red Flag

When a site has high DA but low or zero Trust Flow, it often suggests:

    • A manipulated link profile: The site may have gained DA by acquiring many irrelevant or low-quality links, which is common practice as many SEO’S manipulate this method of link juice by building links to DA sources to lift their link trust, but this only ever goes so far.
    • Lack of editorial standards: Low Trust Flow may indicate the site doesn’t screen or curate its content effectively, which diminishes the value of any backlinks. Forget DA and focus on high TF. Link building companies that charge phenomenal fees for high DA links with low TF are just ripping off their clients. How to Build a Backlink Profile with Trust Flow in Mind

    1. Focus on Niche-Relevant Links

Seek out links from websites that are relevant to your industry or niche. These sites are more likely to have high Trust Flow and provide contextual value. If you find high DA sites with only limited relevance to your niche, say, a page or two, while the rest of the link source is all mixed content from different niches, this will work provided the metrics on both ends are as high as possible. The more related a link source to your own, the more powerful the link source, especially when it holds high metrics.

    2. Evaluate Link Quality

Use tools like Majestic to assess the Trust Flow of potential linking domains. Aim for a balance of DA and TF, but prioritise high TF whenever possible.

    3. Avoid Link Schemes

OK ,now this is a bit tricky. Every form of link building on Google is basically manipoulation of rankings. Googhle states, that if you are building links for the purposes of ranking higher, you will be in violation of the terms of service. As best as I can put it, try and steer clear from excessively spammy websites, even if they have a decent metric in regard to TF and DA

Stay away from strategies that prioritise link volume over quality. If you want to rank these days and rank in a timley manner, you are going to need guest posting or link edits on popular sites, if you do not want to waste time ranking. Just do not get careless and start posting links on sites that are specifically building links rather than offering quality.

    4. Create Link-Worthy Content

The best way to earn high-quality links is to create valuable, engaging content. I mmyself do this every week. There is alsways something to write about that is causing buzz but writing conetnt yourself and posting it on your site also shows experience and that you canb be trusted as well. As you can see everything when it comes to linkl building goes hand in hand.

High-TF websites are more likely to link to resources that provide genuine value to their audience, and this can be you. This will in fact, attract other interested parties wanting to link to you, and what does this do for you? it helps build your own resource for you, and yes, you can get paid for it of you wish,  and what is wrong with that ?

The Bottom Line: Trust Flow " ALWAYS " Trumps Over DA

High DA links without Trust Flow are like a flashy car without an engine—they may look impressive, but they won’t get you anywhere without building thousands of them, and then again there is no guarantee that this will work, especially if your competition has got even marginally strong links. You will not have a hope in Hell.. While DA can serve as a rough indicator of a site’s link profile, it is far from the most reliable metric. Trust Flow, on the other hand, provides a more accurate measure of a link’s value by focusing on trust and credibility. This is what Google looks for.

To build a robust and effective SEO strategy, prioritise backlinks from sites with high Trust Flow. Not only will this help improve your rankings, and rather quickly might I add, provided everythin g else is in order, but it will also safeguard your website against penalties and algorithm updates.

Remember: Quality beats quantity every time. This rule is solid and will remain so.

By shifting your focus from high DA links to high TF links, you’ll create a backlink profile that truly aligns with Google’s priorities—and that’s the key to long-term SEO success.

Short term is exactly that, short term. We want income coming in every single month and that means having credible link authority.

Best Tool For Checking Trust Flow

The best tool by far that I have used and always use when it comes to measuring Trust Flow has always been Majestic SEO

It contains tonne of info from historical data, link trees  and every domain that links to a website

    Majestic Trust Flow
    Majestic Trust Flow
    Citation Trust Flow Comparison
    Majestic Link Tree

    What You Need To Know

Ok, what you need to know is that backlinks play a pretty significant role in influencing trust flow so obtaining the best possible links that also hold high trust flow links will only increase your own trust flow, and that is exactly what Google is searching for. Trust Flow was developed by Majestic and places priority on quality rather than quantity when it comes to backlinks.

    Quality of Backlinks is Key

    1. High-Quality Backlinks: Links from authoritative and trustworthy websites in your niche positively influence Trust Flow. For example, backlinks from .gov, .edu, or well-regarded industry sites carry more weight. This is not limited to just these sites but any privately ownsed site that also contains high trust flow as well. When it comes to trust flow and citation flow in Majestic, the closer these two are 1:1 the better the overall quality
    2. Low-Quality Backlinks: Links from spammy, irrelevant, or low-quality sites can negatively impact Trust Flow and can only show the quality of your links sources or sub par or mediocre.

Relevance of the Linking Domains To Your Website

    1. Trust Flow cares a lot about how closely the website linking to you matches your topic. For example, if a digital marketing blog links to your SEO content, it will boost your Trust Flow more than a link from a site about cooking or gardening. This is old news of course but it is very relevant.
    2. The more related sites, blogs, edu or gov with related topics to your services, the higher you rank. Even if the unrelated site is well-known, it won’t help your Trust Flow as much and might even weaken it slightly.

Link Neighborhoods Or Your Link Tree Matters

    1. What your link tree looks like in regard to its trustflow values will pass this onto your site. Trust Flow looks at the “neighborhood” or link tree of websites linking to you. This means it checks not just the sites linking to you but also the quality of the links those sites have linking to them. It all gets passed on down the line right to your site.
    2. If you’re linked to by websites with a high Trust Flow score, it will boost your own Trust Flow. On the other hand, if you’re linked to by spammy or low-quality websites, it can hurt your score and send it backwards, instead

Link Distribution and Diversity Also Makes A Difference

    • A balanced distribution of backlinks from various sources (blogs, news sites, forums) helps boost Trust Flow. This looks far natural than than spamming from just a  couple sources.
    • Over-reliance on one type of link or excessive backlinks from a single domain can limit growth in Trust Flow.

    Anchor Text and Content Context

    • Backlinks with natural anchor text related to your site’s content improve Trust Flow because they align with the context of the link placement and flows with the topic to your own content.
    • Manipulative or unrelated anchor text might negatively affect the score and raise red flags for search engines. This can actually hurt your rankings in the SERPS instead.

    Do-follow vs. No-follow Links

    • Do-follow links pass Trust Flow, as they directly signal trust and authority to search engines.
    • While no-follow links don’t contribute directly to Trust Flow, they add diversity and authenticity to your backlink profile, which indirectly supports trustworthiness. This makes your overall link sources and link tree lkook totally natural

Removal of Harmful Backlinks Is Paramount

    • Proactively disavowing or removing spammy or low-quality backlinks helps maintain or improve your own Trust Flow by ensuring your link profile remains clean and authoritative. Spam links can creep up even from competitors so disavowing these links is critical.

Always remeber, Backlinks are critical to Trust Flow, but the quality, relevance, and trustworthiness of those links are far more important than their sheer quantity. Quantity does not rule over quality and that is what Trust flow is . To improve Trust Flow, always prioritise obtaining backlinks from reputable and niche-relevant sites while avoiding low-quality, spammy links.

This approach not only enhances Trust Flow but also strengthens overall SEO performance.

Remember, high DA  links with no trust flow do not mean anything. You could have thousands of high DA links just to rank, and a competitor could beat you with just a handful of high trust flow links.

Thanks for visiting and happy link building
