How Bad SEO Clients Can Make Your Life Hell: Lessons in Filtering and Boundaries

Having been in this industry as a Sydney SEO specialist for well over two decades now, I have seen a lot of changes in Google. One of those changes is it’s unfair algorithm updates which it NEVER seems to apply to its Google Ads accounts, yet, hammers the organic SERPS with it relentlessly.  I mean, look at the size of this site just to be able to gain some authority and rankings. On top of this, you have the ever-loving clients who hire you for your small business SEO services, but tell you how to do your job for you. You provide them with Website SEO audit services from the beginning for better rankings, and not long after they log in and undo everything. These types of clients like to hire the best SEO specialists, pay them very little, and then undo everything their SEO experts have set up.

Stick around cause this is a venting post.

Look at what this site had to grow to just to please the discriminative monkeys at Head office in Google? It has grown that big, it has beaten major SEO agencies and now ranks 1 for SEO Sydney

Moving on, as an SEO specialist, my ultimate goal is to help businesses grow by improving their visibility online and driving leads. I have been in the thick of it for over two decades now.

    Good Menu navigation

I take immense pride in my work, and when a client partners with me on the right SEO plan and budget, they often see transformative results. Depending on the niche, it can take some time, but it happens. There is no stopping it when it is executed correctly as long as the client allows me to do my job and that they are following advice with being on the correct plan

” THESE ” are the dream clients that every SEO specialist looks for—the ones who trust my expertise, understand the process, and allow me the time to execute a well-thought-out strategy.

But then, there’s the other type of client. Let’s call them SEO nightmares. These clients make your life hell, and I’m here to shed some light on the frustrations they bring—and why every SEO professional should filter these clients out before taking them on.

    1. The “Send Me Your Prices” Client

The  number 1 time waster client. The ” send me your prices ” client…This is what I like to refer to as the ” It’s already over before it has even already begun client “ The red flag often appears in the first interaction: “Can you send me your prices?”

This question isn’t inherently bad, but often, it signals a client who values cost over quality. When they ask how much they are paying, they are more worried about their outlay instead of what you do to increase their business.

SEO is not a one-size-fits-all service; it’s a tailored solution based on the client’s goals, competition, and market conditions. These clients:

    • Never want to pay the right money: They’re looking for bargain-bin SEO without understanding that cheap SEO costs more in the long run. They will never understand the concept of quality SEO because how much they pay will always be more important.
    • Expect huge discounts: They negotiate endlessly and fail to see the value in high-quality work and what is needed to change their businesses.
    • Don’t respect the process: They’ll expect instant results, oblivious to the fact that good SEO takes time and consistent effort. It doesn’t happen overnight.

I have come to know one thing about the bargain hunter SEO client, if they stay with you longer than six months, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle. The majority do not usually see past this period of time. I have never had one client stay who was a bargain hunter so I don’t take them on anymore. My longest client is with me now for 11 years. My shortest, who was a plumber, was less than three months. Bargain hunter from the first day.

If you get clients like this, end it. I guarantee you that you will work three to six months for nothing. This is not a client that will help support your business while you grow theirs. I often ask clients if they have done SEO before and if so, how many SEO agencies they were with. SEO agencies may suck at their delivery, but there are a handful that are good at what they do. If a client answers that they have been with a few SEO agencies, this will signal A RED  to me. My most recent SEO prospect was a ” LAWYER ” who sent me a message at 3 in the morning ! 3 IN THE MORNING ? I find an email in my inbox asking about SEO services. I call him the following day. He responds with a message… ” Hi PK SEO, I am driving right now but can you please send me a price list of your SEO Costs ” … What human beings can not answer a phone on hands free while driving but can send you a message instead?

Does this remotely sound like a client that is interested in growth? He is more concerned about the price, and what is he? a Lawyer of all things. Lawyer SEO is not cheap by any means when you see who is on page 1 of Google, and he is already asking about the price. Did I send him the price list?  No. Why ? Because I knew I was wasting my time. So, he got a message in return from me but no price list?  I don’t need clients like this.

He won’t be around longer than three months and will be looking for budgets under 1000 dollars. He will also want to rank for all terms in their chosen city, and we know that will never happen.

    The micromanager

    2. The Micromanager Who Won’t Leave You Alone

These clients are a constant source of stress and a consistent pain in the arse.  They call and email incessantly ( WOW , that is a big word ), often with complaints or demands that reveal their lack of understanding about SEO. Their complaints usually sound like this:

    • “Why isn’t my phone ringing yet?”
    • “Why am I not getting more calls?”
    • “Why am I not ranking #1 already, its been a month already?
    • Consistently try to preach to you what you should be doing with their SEO and their demands in applying those requests.
    • And when they don’t rank, blame you instead

Instead of focusing on their own business operations, they hover over your every move, nitpicking and questioning your expertise. Their impatience can derail the strategy, and they don’t allow enough time for the results to come to fruition. Life span of this client? anywhere from 3-6 months and will often leave just as they hit page 1.

    3. The Blamers

Some clients refuse to take accountability for their own shortcomings, whether it’s poor customer service, lack of marketing integration, or outdated business practices. Instead, they’ll:

    • Blame the SEO provider for not delivering results, even when external factors (like their website’s conversion rate or industry competition) are the real issue.
    • Fail to provide the necessary resources, such as quality content, website updates, or branding efforts, yet hold the SEO provider responsible for everything.
    • Log in and consistently change any SEO adjustments already implemented and undo everything and when things don’t work out, blame their SEO guy.

Companies like this are obviously run by poor marketing management. Realistically, what companies like this should be doing, is hiring an SEO professional in-house, paying them 60K a year to do nothing and then quarrelling at the end of the year why their SEO staff member did not deliver results. After this, they can put them on micromanagement.

Companies like this never see online growth. Page 2 and below is full of them.

Actually, that is a good example. The only ones that listen are on page 1. The majority below page 1 are bargain hunters and time wasters.

    4. The Leave-and-Blame Cycle

Listen up as the following is typically what happens after how much time has gone by. After months of demanding miracles, refusing to invest appropriately, and blaming you for their lack of growth, these ” we know everything clients ”  will eventually leave….Thank God.

But it doesn’t stop there—they’ll often badmouth you, leaving false impressions about your skills, maybe even leave you a bad review, which will ” TOTALLY ” piss you off, and make you wish you never met them when you know first-hand the problem stemmed from their unwillingness to commit to the process or follow the correct instructions.

These clients ” NOBODY ” wants. They are more headaches than anything you stand to gain and can tarnish your reputation if they depart on bad grounds.

It is why I always ask when I pre-qualify a new client how many agencies they have been through, and what their involvement was during their stay and why they left.  I have learned not to take on just any client that comes along anymore.

    High-Profile Clients: Not Always Better

Looking at targeting high-profile clients thinking they are better?

You would think that high-profile clients like doctors, lawyers, or other professionals would be more rewarding. Yeah, well, guess again, not always. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Some of these clients are among the worst offenders. Despite their professional stature, they can display the same toxic behaviours:

    • They’re overly cost-conscious: You’d expect someone who charges $500 per hour for their own services to respect the value of SEO expertise, but many don’t.
    • Difficult to manage clients like this expect miracles overnight: Professionals often struggle to understand that SEO timelines are different from their own service timelines.
    • They’re hyper-critical: These clients tend to scrutinise every detail, questioning your every move, while ignoring their own deficiencies in customer service or operations. Nobody needs them and they are not worth the headaches.

    How to Filter Bad Clients

Trust me when I say don’t hire clients like this. They are not worth it. To protect your sanity and business reputation, it’s important to develop a system for filtering potentially demanding clients. Here’s how:

    1. Pre-Qualify Clients: Before taking anyone on, ask detailed questions about their business goals, expectations, and understanding of SEO. If they’re only focused on price or quick wins, simply walk away.

    2. Set Clear Boundaries: Establish clear communication channels and timelines. Let them know upfront that SEO takes time and requires patience.

    3. Communicate Value Early: Educate them on the difference between quality SEO and cheap SEO. Help them understand what their investment includes and why it’s worth it. If through the filtering process you discover they have come from another three or four agencies, and they are demanding the best possible price above anything else, tell them to go away.

    4. Eg: I once had a dentist ask me to rank them for about twenty different keywords in their local area. When they told me their budget was $500 dollars a month, I informed them the best way they could invest their $500 dollars is to go and give it to the first nearest toothless homeless man they found, because he would get better use out of it than they would. I can’t stand dealing with someone who charges 3 grand for a root canal but wants monthly repeat business from a $500 dollar investment.
    5. Be Willing to Say No To These Idiots: Some clients simply aren’t worth the headache. Saying no to bad clients leaves you with more time and energy to focus on the good ones.

My Final Thoughts On This Matter: Choose Clients Wisely

Bad SEO clients are a drain on your time, energy, and mental health.

They can make you question your passion for the industry and distract you from achieving great results for the clients who truly value your expertise.

There is FAR more to lose by taking clients that are rude and demanding than what they have to offer.

The damage they stand to do to your business is not worth the peanuts they offer.

As SEO professionals, we need to remember that we have the power to choose who we work with.

By filtering out toxic clients and focusing on partnerships built on mutual respect and realistic expectations, we can deliver better results and build a more rewarding career.

To all my fellow SEO specialists out there: Don’t let the bad clients win. They’re not worth your time, your energy, or your sanity. Leave them for the cheap SEO agencies.

They know how to deal with them better and deliver nothing to these clients but broken promises on shoestring budgets.

Focus on the clients who trust you, invest in their success, and give you the freedom to do what you do best—helping businesses thrive online.
