    How to Improve Website SEO

How to Improve Website SEO: A Step-by-Step Guide for 2025

So You Want To Improve Your Website SEO

In the world of ranking online and reaching your target audience these days, it takes great work and effort to be able to pull this off, but it happens every day from website owners who persist with getting to page 1 of Google. As a small business SEO specialist, this is always our goal with our clients.

Google only ever places the top-tier sites on page 1, and if yours is one of them, then you shall be joining the ranks. If you are not doing this yourself, than you need to have SEO services that clearly know what they are doing

If you’ve ever wondered why your website isn’t ranking higher on Google, you’re not alone.

Many businesses struggle with search engine optimisation (SEO), but the good news is, that improving your website’s SEO doesn’t have to be a mystery. You just have to put the effort into it or hire the best SEO services in Sydney who knows what the HELL they are doing to do it for you. and it all starts with website SEO audit services

In this guide, I’ll quickly walk you through on the basics to help you optimise your site and just maybe, start driving some organic traffic to your site that is also converting customers.

    Website SEO
    On Page SEO

Pro Tip: Ever Tried These Link Agregators? Platforms like Ahrefs or SEMrush can provide a more in-depth SEO audit, uncovering weaknesses and potential strengths to help you beat the competition. Learn how it works and use to your advantage

    1. Conduct a Website Audit

To understand why your site is not appearing high on search you have to understand a couple of things first:

    1. What is wrong with it
    2. How to find what is wrong with it

An SEO Audit is a must do before anything else with SEO . Google look strictly at your site these days based on authority overall and trust. The first step is to analyse your sie’s performance on the web. Use tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console to identify areas for improvement. Check for:

    • Broken links. This causes a bad user experience.
    • Slow-loading pages, this will cause a bounce further reducing your rankings.
    • Mobile responsiveness, Again, user experience, increased bounce rates when this happens resulting in further drops in your rankings. You must fix this. Speed, especially on mobile is everything today. I have personally seen increases in rankings from improving site speeds. Not only does it boost rankings on mobile but also on desktop.
    • Duplicate content. If you have duplicate content on your site, you have lost the war already. I have seen Google de-index site pages from newly onboarded clients and when I checked these pages for plagiarism, the entire site was rife with plagiarised pages. Once unique content was written, the pages were re-indexed.

Pro Tip:  Just a heads up while you are working on your site. It is also speculated that bad Google reviews can also play a role in your website rankings, so if you have any bad reviews against your business, dispose of them yourself by dealing with Google review flagging or delete bad reviews on Google professionally. and do it quickly.

Reply, dispose of them, or get a professional service for removing bad Google reviews.

Optimise On-Page SEO. It Is Highly Important

Optimize On-Page SEO On-page SEO involves optimising individual web pages to rank higher in search results. It may not sound like much but these are the first signals that tell Google what your site is based on. You want to be certain you are being clear with Google on first impressions.

These metrics use to have high relevance placed on them. Not so much now but they are still important, especially your htags. Key areas to focus on include:

    • Title Tags: Include primary keywords at the beginning of your titles. Crucial
    • Meta Descriptions: Write compelling descriptions to improve click-through rates. Write in a way that captures the users attention
    • Header Tags (H1, H2, H3): Use headings to structure content and include keywords naturally.
    • URL Structure: Keep URLs short, descriptive, and keyword-rich. Long titles can be confusing. If you look a the sub url of this page, it is short and to the point ” How To Improve Website SEO “
    Optimise On-Page SEO
    Create High-Quality Content

Pro Tip: Focus on creating long-form content (1,500+ words) to establish authority and rank for multiple keywords. The more content and researched information you apply to your content, the more keywords you are also likely to add as you go along.

    3. Create High-Quality Content

Ok, to get one fact off the table right now is that this saying is as true today as it was twenty years ago. Out of all the algorithms that have come and gone, all Google has ever done is intensify this requirement from website owners. Content is king when it comes to SEO. Always has been, always will be . If you look at it, what it really is now with all the algorithms that have rolled out is this:

    1. Content
    2. Content is written from an authority
    3. Content that can be trusted
    4. Content that is written from experience.

So what has changed? Google’s demand with highly engaging content, so content is still king.

All you have to do is ensure your content:

    • Addresses user intent.
    • Is well-researched and offers value.
    • Includes relevant keywords naturally, and is not keyword spammed.
    • Has engaging visuals, such as images or videos.
    • And more importantly, answers the user query.

    4. Improve Website Speed

So your web design is pretty, delivers your message, but takes ten minutes to load, ” BUT IT STILL LOOKS PRETTY “…. Pretty does not get the phone ringing when nobody can see how pretty it really is because Google keeps tanking its rankings.

A slow-loading web design can hurt your rankings. And it does. Google has a habit of tanking your rankings for overall search terms when it can see people are just bouncing off your site.

We improved our very own website for speed and saw massive jumps for the overall keywords that we target, not just one or two keywords. It does not have to be 100%. As long as it is high enough above your competitors, you will do well enough. If you hit the mark at 100%, even better. There are a few WordPress plugins you can use that will help speed up your site immensely in some cases.  These are listed below. Try them and see how you go

    1. WP-Optimize
    2. WP Fastest Cache
    3. W3 Total Cache
    4. WP Speed of Light
    5. Imagify

These are basic plugins that are heavily installed and should make some difference to your website speed but this depends on your overall site structure and possible conflicting issues but generally speaking they work OK.

There are also paid versions like WP Rocket and Short Pixel. The paid ones do work well if you are UP for paid subscriptions

Can not stress enough how important this is that you must get this right.

We personally use these two tools for our very own site speed tracking. Use tools like GTmetrix or Page Speed Insights to test your site’s speed. To improve loading times:

    • Compress images. Must do this. Also repeatedly do this as you update your site.
    • Enable browser caching.
    • Use a content delivery network (CDN).
    • Minimise HTTP requests.

GT Metrix grades from A to E If you land on A as with the image to the right at close to 100% you are on easy street.

    5. Build High-Quality Backlinks

    5. Build High-Quality Backlinks

Backlinks from reputable sites signal to search engines that your content is valuable.

This has always been the case with link building, but from the algorithms that have rolled out in the last ten or so years, Google seems to be placing more of an emphasis on ” YOUR OWN PERSONAL ” experience at what it is you offer. That means your own website. What is on your website matters.  Ensure your content is up there first. You can have all the high-quality links you like, but if your site is falling short of  Google’s EEAT algorithm, no link is going to save you. You still however need backlinks

    To build backlinks:

    • Guest post on industry blogs. This shows your experience in the topic.
    • Collaborate with influencers.
    • Create shareable content like infographics. Spread your domain among different social platforms. Social signals work.

    6. Leverage Local SEO (If Applicable)

If you are a local business, the best thing you do for your brand is to target local.

Our own business is primarily targeted at local but we also target global but our city of choice is Sydney SEO services, so we provide SEO Sydney services to local businesses with SEO packages for small businesses. How you structure your site and where you want to see your brand grow matters when you put your site together.

Keep your SEO focused where your business needs it to be. For businesses targeting a local audience, optimise for local search. Use the city within reason through your pages, not just your homepage.

Adding suburb postcodes and local area landmarks can help build local searches which can also help you appear for ” near me terms after a while of building pages.

    Steps include:

    • Adding your business to Google My Business. Ensure you encourage positive reviews. If you receive negative reviews, you must remove them If you can do this yourself, you can hire a Google review removal service
    • Including location-specific keywords. Especially on your website.
    • Encouraging customer reviews. Offer incentives for your customers if they are happy to write a review on your business.
    • List in as many online directories as well
    • Focus on NAP ( Name Address Phone Number ) Ensure these are accurate and identical across all listings
    • If they were happy with your services, there is no reason they shouldn’t.

If you can not do this yourself, you can always hire a local SEO Expert to do this for you. There are plenty of SEO services out there that can provide some of the best SEO experts to help your brand climb the rankings and get you those much-needed sales. Finding the best SEO agency in Sydney is not hard when you are already here. 7. Monitor and Adapt

SEO is not a one-time effort. SEO is always ongoing and never stops. Nobody and I mean ” NOOOBODY ” on page 1 ever stops SEO on their site for prolonged periods of time.

If they do, they drop. Page 1 is a dog eat dog situation. If you are not eating, your being eaten. Continuously monitor your site’s performance and adapt to changes in search engine algorithms. We do, it’s how e keep ahead. Use tools like:

    • Google Search Console for tracking keyword rankings.
    • SEMrush for competitor analysis.
    • Ahrefs also, which is popular.
