Having provided SEO services for a large number of clients in different niches in my time, one thing I can tell you is backlinks from credible sources, and preferably related ones, are the backbone of solid growth online for the long term.
You need to face reality and bite the bullet and realise, you are going to have to0 spend money here whether you like it or not.
If you’re trying to grow your website’s traffic and authority, backlinks are your best friend—especially the kind you get from guest posts on relevant sites in your niche. Also, the higher the DA nad TF, the better.
The problem? Most people start link building with guesswork. They pitch random sites, hope for a “yes,” and end up frustrated after weeks of silence.
Here’s the shortcut people: competitor backlink analysis.
Instead of reinventing the wheel, you look at where your competitors are already getting their best links—and use that intel to target sites that are proven to say yes.
This guide will walk you through the process step by step in plain English.
Once you learn this stuff and get it under wraps, it is quite easy to execute, and you can almost do it with closed eyes.
Competitor backlink analysis is exactly what it sounds like: checking which sites link to your competitors and figuring out how they got those links.
Why it’s a game‑changer:
You skip the guesswork. Instead of cold‑pitching random blogs, you focus on websites that already link to content like yours.
You learn what works. Seeing your competitors’ links shows which topics, formats, and angles editors are actually accepting. Pretty cool stuff huh ?
You save time. No more chasing sites that will never reply or wasting energy on dead ends.
Every backlink your competitor has is a sign that someone out there found their content valuable enough to recommend.
By learning from those wins—and doing it a little better—you can land guest posts with higher success rates. In any case, in may cases, you don’t have to get backlinks from the exact same sites.
As long as you can achieve links from equal or higher DA sites that are related, even better and there are plenty of guest post services around as well.
Start with the competitors that actually matter. Your direct competitors.
Who are they, what are their targets, do their goals also align with yours? If so, then these are the guys you need to pursue.
These are the sites fighting for the same audience and keywords as you are—not the giant global brands you’ll never compete with or the hobby blogs that don’t move the needle.
Here’s a simple way to find them:
Google your main keywords and note the top 10 results.
Look for overlap—sites offering similar services, targeting the same audience, or ranking for the same topics.
Make a shortlist of 5–7 competitors:
A few direct rivals
One or two “stretch” competitors that are slightly ahead
A promising try hard newcomer
This mix keeps your guest‑posting targets realistic but also gives you ideas for growth.
It will give you some guidance on how to also better structure your site and a better understanding of who your real competitors are in your niche.

To analyse backlinks properly, you need reliable tools. We use some of these tools ourselves, especially Majestic which tells us a lot about trust flow..
If your data is out‑of‑date, you’ll waste time chasing links that no longer exist.
Here are the top options:
Ahrefs – Massive live index and super fast updates. Only problem, bloody expensive for the little guys. I heard they can also be bull headed
Semrush – Combines backlink data with keyword insights.
Majestic – Great for checking link trust and spotting spam.
Moz Link Explorer – Beginner‑friendly with clear “Spam Score.” Buuuuut not too many people takes it’s spam score too seriously, but use it as a guide
SE Ranking – Affordable and still offers solid link data.
If you’re new to all this stuff, start with a trial. Don’t go straight into paying a subscription. Get to know what suits you best.
Run the same competitor in two tools and see which one gives you the clearest, most up‑to‑date results. Stick with that.
I can honestly say, though, that not many tools always return the same results. Some come close, but not all the time. Use these tools for backlinks analysis of course, but traffic numbers can differ significantly from tool to tool.
When you pull a competitor’s backlinks, the list can feel endless. Here’s how to cut through the noise:
Filter for do‑follow links first. These pass SEO value—ignore the rest for now. Obviously, in your link building efforts, it doesn’t matter if you get a few no follow links. Why? because they look natural. Not only that, but a lot of no follow links also come from high traffic sites, and you are not going to miss traffic for the sake of the link. We do this ourselves for our own site.
Check context, not just URLs. A backlink in a long‑form blog post is gold, especially if it is a high DA and TF site. A link in a footer or sidebar? Probably worthless for guest posting.
Check the site’s activity. Use tools like Similarweb to make sure the blog actually gets traffic and still publishes new posts. Keep away from PBN’S. A waste of time in today’s algorithms. Most PBN’S today would have to practically be a real site with traffic to even pass with algorithms and most aren’t. Especially SEO providers from Indian based companies.
Once you clean up your list, you’ll be left with the high‑value targets worth pitching.
Look, you’re not going to like this, but it is going to become obvious that keyword research and backlink building is a royal pain in the ass, but it is part and parcel with successful SEO, and you are going to have to do it.
Not every backlink is worth your time. Use this quick checklist before pitching:
Audience fit – Do their readers care about your topic?
Content quality – Are the posts well‑written and trustworthy? you have to becareful with AI written garbage these days as well.
Domain authority – Mid‑range is often ideal: The stronger the better, especially with high Trust Flow..
Engagement – Check for comments, shares, or newsletter activity.
Healthy outbound links – Make sure they link to reputable sites, not spammy rubbish
If a site checks most of these boxes, it’s a great candidate. If not, move on—forcing a guest post where it doesn’t belong is a waste.
Your competitor backlink research gives you the blueprint for outreach. When you can look at your competitors site structure and their backlinks, it is always a blueprint.
Here’s how to use it:
Reference what works. If your competitor got a link from a “Top 10 Tips” post, pitch something similar but fresh—like a case study or advanced guide.
Personalise your pitch. Mention the post you liked and why. Editors get flooded with generic emails—they’ll notice if you did your homework.
Offer clear value. Explain how your article will help their readers, not just your SEO.
Keep the ask light. Invite feedback instead of demanding a “yes” immediately.
The goal is to start a conversation, not shove a link down their throat. Smashing link requests off the bat will 9 times out 10 get you nowhere….” Can I have link cause you got a cool site? ..Nope ” …It is that simple
Don’t just build links and hope for the best—Where you can, try and track the results. The simplest metrics to monitor are:
Unique visitors coming from guest posts
Bounce rate of that traffic (lower is better)
Increases in your domain authority or ranking keywords. An increase in domain authority is a GOOOOD Sign.
Social shares and engagement on the guest content
Conversions or leads generated from referral traffic.
Measure these consistently and double down on the sites and topics that work best for you.
Ok, so you have a great advantage now. Even with competitor insights, there are traps to watch out for:
Relying only on domain authority and ignoring bad content or spammy ads. Domain authority on its own with no Trust flow will get you nowhere, especially if there is no traffic to the site, or even worse, just has shit content on the site with a high DA.
Pitching topics your competitor already covered. Think outside the box
Ignoring guest post guidelines or assuming all links will be do‑follow
Sending the same outreach template to every editor
Forgetting to check if the site still accepts guest contributions
A little extra homework saves you from wasted effort and lost credibility.
Competitor backlink analysis takes guest posting from random guesswork to a focused, data‑driven strategy.
Start by studying who links to your competitors
Filter for high‑value, active sites with a relevant audience
Craft personalised pitches based on proven content types
Track the results and adjust your approach over time
Do this consistently, and guest posting stops feeling like a shot in the dark. It becomes an art over time. It seems a little daunting in the beginning sure, but it gets easier as you go along . Instead, every link you earn will be a step toward real authority, traffic, and sales.
